"I'm not seeking penance for what I've done, Father.
I'm asking for forgiveness... for what I'm about to do."
I'm asking for forgiveness... for what I'm about to do."
DAREDEVIL
Matthew Michael Murdock
Civilian Lawyer, Vigilante Crime Fighter, Protector of Hell's Kitchen
One would say that Matthew Murdock carries the same curse that plagues the social lives of most vigilante superheroes: the uncanny ability to screw up any significant relationships he is lucky enough to develop. However, much of the difficulty stems from the complicated logistics of being friends with "normal" people. It's simply too damn hard to stay friends with civilians who can either not know or know but not understand (oftentimes both) the dangerous lifestyle Matt has embraced and made an integral part of his being.
Fellow "not normals" may be another story.
Matthew Murdock is a near-insufferable do-gooder and would-be saint; an inexhaustible fountain of hope and righteousness with a martyr complex that is unparalleled even among heroes. He fiercely believes that there is good in all people, even the worst of criminals, which is worth fighting to save even when it exists in the smallest measure. He would go through great lengths to avoid killing during battle and would oppose anyone who tries to take human lives, even with noble intentions.
Matt is a tremendously loyal comrade who has many times proven his willingness to sacrifice his life for both friends and total strangers with equal fervor. However, his first instinct is to keep people at a distance whenever he feels their closeness to him may result in their getting hurt. There is a proud side to him that believes he can shoulder burdens on his own, even when in reality he does need help.
Although unaccustomed to working in teams, Daredevil is willing to enter into partnerships with other heroes such as himself for the purpose of achieving specific missions. He recognizes and accepts that he is just a small fry in this big world filled with heroes and villains much more powerful than he, and has therefore has dedicated himself simply to the protection of his immediate home territory. However, when called upon to serve a bigger purpose, he would respond, regardless of the challenges it would pose to his human limits.
In his civilian life, Matthew Murdock has proven quite charming towards women. This best friend Foggy Nelson has alluded to his bizarre ability to zero in on the most attractive girls and draw their mutual interest. Two of his past romances include the deadly Elektra Natchios and the golden-hearted Karen Page, which highlights his diverse tastes in companionship. Unfortunately, Matt's unwillingness to yield from his martyr/hero ways prevent him from enjoying the love offered by the women he sincerely cares about in return.
